How can I connect my Computer to my Home Theater System?

I am trying to play music from my computer through my Home Theater System. My home theater system has an USB port, but when I try to connect that to the one on my computer, the message "no USB" shows up on the home theater system. Is there any special software or hardware that I need to connect the two?
use the sound port output on the pc. connect that using an adapter to the sound system
