How to set up a home theater system?

I hav a Sony Bravia LCD TV and a LG LHB335 blu-ray home theater system. I can get the dvd to play on the tv and the sound comes from the speakers. How do I get the audio from the tv to come out of the home theater system speakers? Do I need a Surround sound speaker bar to go with this set up? Need as much info as I can get. Help.

Connect optical cable or composite cables ( red & white ) from cable box or TV to Home Theater System for audio.

    Here is the setup…

When you play a DVD, it is decoded by the Blu-ray which has surround sound set up. Typical connect is HDMI which also has sound through the LCD TV. So sounds come from the Blu-ray, not the TV. The TV is just another speaker.

The Blu-ray has several audio channel typcially 5:1 or 7:1 depending on the number of speaker channel. Each one is design specifically to project different level of sounds. The Subwoofer project bass sound. Side speakers with tweekers project sharp audio sounds. Center and rear speaker has a combination of Large, medium, and small speakers. Together they form a sound system, with each project a specific sounds to enhance the audio experience. Each one sure be labels and the Blu-ray should have come with a instruction manuals for the setup.

This is the setup for surround system on wikipedia:

Your HTS has two digital audio inputs; connect the dig. audio output from the TV to one of them.
If your TV’s output is coax and your HTS has only optical, you need a s/pdif coax to optical adaptor.
If you have a set-top box, connect the set-top box dig. audio out to the HTS.

connect the tvs optical out to the surround sound optical in. You dont need a sound bar that is what you have the theater system for
